London A2Z Map 1930s Millions of people live and work in London and other UK cities. The A-Z was started by Phyllis Pearsall MBE in 1936. (link to A-Z about the company site). Since its inception it has grown to become the practical source for all direction-finding in major towns and cities.

Universal sense of place
There is something intriguing about the language and layout of the maps which has always fascinated Tony Davis of Art Meets Matter. When asked why he created the A-Z range he commented “there is something commonplace and simple about the maps which is seductive in design terms. When played with and re-interpreted the maps, streets and locations at once so familiar become something else altogether – a shared visual statement about people and places.”
Hidden language and ideas
The A-Z Collection explores the language hidden in the street and place names and gives it back in a number of thought-provoking designs including: cards, espresso, tea-towel, porcelain mugs, deckchairs and custom-made objects and materials.

A2Z Espresso and CardMap haiku
In addition to the retail design range, Tony Davis has created a number of ‘found poetry’ map haiku pieces based on the A-Z map as limited edition prints and framed canvases. The ‘Adam and Eve’ print is based on page 1. Tony will be ‘writing’ more in 2006. Click here for more info.

New for 2006
Also new will be additions based on the card range now translated into mug form. ‘Sugar Sugar’ will be the first mug to appear with more to follow throughout the year.
